Gwynne Roberts was the first filmmaker to enter northern Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. He is smuggled across the border of Iran by Kurdish peshmerga fighters and witnesses the Kurdish uprising against Saddam’s regime.

When filming the Kirkuk oil fields, he is forced to flee the Iraqi army as they attack the Kurdish forces, and reports the agony of the Kurds as they flee to the borders.

Broadcast as a Channel 4 Dispatches programme in the UK, Kurdistan: A Dream Betrayed was nominated for the Royal Television Society’s Current Affairs Award.
